Several Important Bug Fixes

Not long ago, security researcher Brian Krebs discovered an issue with the iPhone 11. This issue, addressed as part of the latest iOS bug fixes, involves a chip dubbed U1, which functions on UWB (Ultra Wide Band). Due to international regulatory requirements, the U1 chip has to disable itself at certain locations. This requires the phone to periodically check for a user’s location, even if that functionality is turned off.

Recently, Apple released iOS 13.3.1, which contains several additional latest iOS bug fixes. One key fix allows you to disable the periodic location checks performed by the U1 Chip.

Apple has stated that they only use the location data to verify that you’re not in an area where the U1 chip must be disabled. However, skepticism remains. Giant tech companies have made similar claims before, and it often comes out later that they misuse or sell the data. It’s no surprise that Apple has faced backlash over this issue.

Given Apple’s history of responsiveness, they moved quickly to address user concerns. As part of the latest iOS bug fixes, the new update lets you turn off these location checks.

To disable this functionality, go to Settings → Privacy → Location Services → System Services. There, you’ll find a toggle switch labeled Networking & Wireless with the location services symbol next to it. Toggle the switch off, and the icon disappears. That’s all there is to it.

Of course, iOS 13.3.1 includes many more latest iOS bug fixes, so be sure to review Apple’s release notes. This will help you prioritize installing the update. Kudos to Apple for their rapid response on the location services issue.
